What is Marshmallow?

Marshmallow (Althaea Officinalis) contains 40 grams of dried Marsh Mallow, a herb that has been known for centuries for its soothing properties. Traditionally, Marshmallow is used to provide relief for coughs, sore throats and irritation of the airways. It can also help with skin irritation and minor burns (in fresh form), and offer support for stomach and intestinal complaints. Interestingly, the word marshmallow immediately brings to mind the well-known soft sweet. That is no coincidence: this treat is named after this special herb. Originally, the root of the Marshmallow was even an essential ingredient in the original marshmallow recipe, although the plant no longer appears in the modern version of the sweet. Even so, Marshmallow remains popular as a natural home remedy, thanks to its versatile uses and soothing effect.

How do you use Marshmallow?

Our Marshmallow is supplied as a coarsely cut, dried herb blend of 40 grams. Our advice is to make tea from it. Use 1 to 2 teaspoons per cup of hot water, let the tea steep for 5 to 20 minutes and then strain the mixture. The longer the tea steeps, the stronger the flavour will be. Marshmallow has a pleasant, not overwhelming flavour and is therefore ideal as a soothing herbal tea. You can adjust the flavour to taste with a little honey or lemon. For the active components to work optimally, it is important that the water is no longer boiling when you pour it over the herbs. Water of around 90°C is ideal: let boiled water cool for one to two minutes before using it. A well-sealed teapot or mug with a lid helps to retain volatile substances while steeping.

Where does Marshmallow come from?

Marshmallow (Althaea Officinalis), or Marsh Mallow, is a plant from the mallow family (Malvaceae). The official name derives from the Greek word Althaia, meaning 'she who heals'. This herbaceous plant originates from Europe, West Asia and North Africa, but is now also cultivated in other parts of the world. Althaea Officinalis grows mainly in damp, marshy areas and has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. The name Marshmallow refers to the plant's natural habitat (marshes) and to the soft, mucilaginous character of the plant. For medicinal purposes the root, leaves and flowers are used. The root contains a high level of mucilage, known for its soothing effect on mucous membranes.
