Origin
Absinth is made from Artemisia absinthium, a plant that occurs naturally in Europe, North Africa and Asia. The plant grows in dry, sunny areas with stony soil and can be recognised by its silvery leaves and characteristic bitter scent. Wormwood was already used by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians to support digestion and cleanse the body. Over the centuries the herb has also played a role in traditional rituals and drinks. The best known of these is the historic drink absinthe, in which the herb Wormwood was used. The plant contains the substance thujone, which at very high doses can have a mildly hallucinatory effect. As a result, absinthe became a popular drink among artists in the 19th century, including Van Gogh. In present-day herbalism the plant is used only within safe doses as a natural means to support digestion.Available contents
